Most of the causative agents of the common cold are viruses. The common cold is a contagious viral infection of the upper respiratory tract. The most commonly implicated virus is a rhinovirus, about 30–50%. The common cold symptoms are very similar to those of a influenza (flu), they both are respiratory illness, but caused by different viruses.
Children's immune system is not stabilised therefore young children suffer from cold more often. Usually 6 - 8 times per year, with symptoms lasting for 14 days in average.
From the time of contact until onset of symptoms is generally 24 to 72 hours but can be as early as 10 to 12 hours after exposure.
Common cold and the flu have so much in common that it can sometimes be hard to tell them apart. Both are caused by viruses that infect your airways. Flu is worse than the common cold, and symptoms are more intense. Common cold are more likely to have a runny or stuffy nose and in general do not result in serious health problems. Flu can have very serious associated complications, such as pneumonia, bacterial infections or hospitalizations.
